Losing Gravity - In the Studio
May 23rd 2006. LG is back in the studio to record five new songs recently added to the set list. New overhead drum mics are added to the collection. We tried a few different things this time - Kris did the vocals from upstairs in the Library - in an attempt to minimize drum bleed and I worked out the buzz problems with using the PODs. We also added some new headphones including a nice isolation set that I used. The bass also went through a bass Pod instead of just a direct box. The basic tracks turned out nice.
May 25th 2006. Kris and Charlie are back to overdub vocals. A minor bass error was corrected and all the vocal tracks were completed. I am now sidelined by a major back problem and the projected completion date of June 3rd will not be possible.
May 26th 2006. I attempt to do some 'clean up' on the drum and vocal tracks but my back says no. I did get to try out some new powered plug ins - the LA2A compressor on the vocals and drums and a few new reverbs but not much progress was made.
June 20, 2006 Still no progress but I am planning on restarting tomorrow. Pictures will be posted soon.

August 18th Finally back to the studio....For Now, The Stars, and Something. Guitars are added and close to final mixing for the three songs. Posted on the web. 'Something' will require the guitars to be redone but it is close enough for now. A preview CD is put together for distribution at the Rusty Nail gig.
Recording Archive:
July 5th 2005. LG enters the studio Jay set up in spaced shared with his daughter's play schoolroom. The drums were set up and miked while Allan works on the problems on the blackboard. We recorded 8 songs for our new CD, with the basic tracks all done live. Due to drum bleed on the vocal tracks, the vocals will be redone, along with the guitar - due to a malfunctioning POD. We recorded Break the Craze, Divided, Floor Below, First Last, Deeper Understanding, Mixed Up, Who I Am, and Oh No You Don't. The release date is Aug 12th and will be available at the Rusty Nail gig.
Updates:
7/23/05 Guitar tracks completed for most of the songs (for now). Rough mixing and cleanup started. First test CD run to determine overall balance, drum mix and bass response.
7/26/05 Most of the band hears the rough CD, Allan is surprised because he thought recording in the basement would suck.
7/28/05 All vocal tracks completed. Mixing, editing continues. Allan dictates lyric revisions in a phone message, however since the phones were turned off during recording, the message was received after we finished the vocals. Surf's up.
7/29/05 Rough mix of Break the Craze posted on Music page. Start of the song revised because, after playing the song for a year, we recorded it wrong. Digital editing is so much fun! CD title discussion begins, poorly. Graphics under development for CD.
7/30/05 Rough mix of Floor Below completed.
7/31/05 Rough mix of Oh No You Don't completed. More fun in the editing department when four lines of vocals are in the wrong place. (It seems that the quality control in the "Review what you recorded" department was off that day - much like it was during the Divided guitar tracking). Further mixing is interrupted by the arrival of Godzilla Final Wars - 3 DVD set (a rare Sunday USPS delivery). Much time is spent trying to decode the Japanese only Menus.
8/02/05 Added guitar parts to Deeper Understanding, Mixed Up and revised guitar parts to Divided (chorus and solo) and First Last (intro solo). The Black Flying V came out for First Last. I gave up after about 15 attempts at the intro and went back to the Strat.
8/03/05 Deeper Understanding gets mixed - not too many troubles on this one.
8/04/05 Who I Am mix completed. Divided gets a major overhaul, with a revised intro thanks to some cut and paste.
8/05/05 Mixing continues with Mixed Up and First Last. Both go fairly well but the guitar leads on both are scrapped. Autotune becomes a permanent member of the plug-in family. Some fine tuning on the other songs as the deadline looms closer.
8/06/05 Kids are out of the house so it's time to crank up the Mesa and get the leads done. At least it sounded like a good idea. Compromises abound and it finally gets done, at least for now. More fine tuning....and at the end of the day an 8 song CD in the proper order. Running time is 28:15. Still some more minor adjustments needed to finish things up. Time to break out the crayons and start on the CD artwork.
8/7/05 Final 'final; mixing, error corrections and burning the CD master for duplication. MP3s created from the master files for posting on the web.
8/8/05 I have a strong dislike for Alesis monitors. Now entering stage 3 of the supposed Final mix. I may have to pull the trusty (but not magnetically shielded) JBLs out of storage. Quote of the day - "Where's the bass?".
8/9/05 A few minor corrections and the CD gets delivered to the rest of the band. One minor 'weird sound' that popped up in one of the songs has to be corrected but otherwise it's the "I'll live with it" mix. Allan concedes that indeed, the CD was finished before the deadline.
